St Marks
The photograph here was printed on white paper with a black surround.
In its unframed state the figure in the foreground aligned with the campanile, was very much the focus of the image and the building on the left and St Mark’s itself looked merely overexposed. By using a grey mount, the effect of the white paper in highlighting the darker areas was reduced, bringing the buildings back into focus and balancing the figure thereby widening the view to the looker.
The small black border was retained to echo the frame and the black fillet inside the glass and give a little extra emphasis to the sight edge.
